Working the day
Whether you get a higher rate, a flat extra amount or nothing extra for hours worked on a public holiday is set by your award or enterprise agreement, and by how your employer applies it.
Every state and territory for 2026 and 2027, plus the local days that depend on your council or town. Dates only, so you can check them against your roster.
By state and territory
Each page lists 2026 and 2027, with substitute days and part-day holidays marked.
Local days
These aren't on the state-wide lists. Whether one applies depends on your council or locality, so we list them by place, with sources.
For shift workers
A date on this page tells you when the holiday is. It doesn’t tell you what you’re owed. That depends on your award or agreement. Find yours in our list of supported awards, then use Pay Check to compare your payslip against it.
Whether you get a higher rate, a flat extra amount or nothing extra for hours worked on a public holiday is set by your award or enterprise agreement, and by how your employer applies it.
Some agreements give time off or an extra day instead of, or on top of, extra pay. Others don't. Check your agreement's wording, or ask payroll.
Whether you are paid for a public holiday you were not rostered on also depends on your award or agreement and your employment type.
Some holidays apply in one region only, or only from a set hour. When Shift It can’t confirm a day applies at your workplace, it marks it “may apply” and leaves it out of your total.
