Which nursing jobs are covered by the Nurses Award?
The Nurses Award covers private hospitals, aged care facilities, general practice, community nursing, and clinical services not covered by a state public-sector EA.1 NSW, Victorian, and other state public hospital nurses usually work under their own enterprise agreements.
What are the weekend penalty rates?
Saturday hours attract a 50% penalty loading (150% of the ordinary hourly rate). Sunday hours attract a 75% loading (175%). Casual employees receive the casual loading in addition.1
What are the shift loadings?
Afternoon shift (finishing between 6pm and midnight) attracts a 12.5% loading. Night shift (between midnight and 6am) attracts a 15% loading. Permanent night shift is 30%.1 Shift It applies these per-segment based on when your shift actually runs.
My state has its own EA — which rules apply?
If you work at a public hospital in NSW, Victoria, or other states with a separate nursing EA, the enterprise agreement overrides the Nurses Award for most pay items. See our dedicated pages for the NSW Nurses Award and VIC Nurses Award 2024-28.
